Jacksonville, NC has grown at a brisk rate since Camp Lejeune, NC was established in 1941 in Onslow County. Camp Lejeune, NC was named in honor of Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The qualities that drew the Marine Corps to build the "Worlds' Most Complete Amphibious Base" were some of the same ones that lead to the city's formation along the New River. Not only did the population double upon the establishment of Camp Lejeune, NC, with hundreds more coming to the area to work on defense projects, property values escalated according to how close they were to the base of operations. Many of these properties included new homes.

Jacksonville, NC's growth remained steady until 1990 when the city annexed portions of Camp Lejeune, NC.
